What to Do If Your Baby is Not Sleeping
by Gerrard Mackenzie
During their first 6 - 12 weeks, most infants sleep quite intermittently. You would be a lucky parent if you already saw a sleep pattern emerging in your baby before or during this age period. You will not have to endure this erratic sleeping schedule though since after your baby turns 3 - 4 months, you can already help him/her to have a regular sleeping pattern.

Still, your baby will learn this pattern depending on how positively and consistently you would act during the process. Of course, it can be difficult for first time parent to identify what is the best thing to do in order to help your baby develop a pattern of sleep. Furthermore, many people may offer varying and often contradictory advices to you.

The thing is, as a parent, you are the one who will be the most expert concerning your baby's particular needs and developing attitude. No one else but you would also know what would work best for your baby and whole family. Thus, regarding sleeping patterns for your baby, it is important that you pinpoint what you want, and then decide to go for it.

Remember that babies are extremely adaptable. You can actually teach your baby whatever you think, is for the best. Either you teach him to fall asleep with you or without you, in his cot/crib or in your bed, beside you. The choice is up to you. Still, even if you happen to find some advice from a magazine or book, which you feel is effective for your baby, you will be better off sticking with a sleeping plan that would feel right and appropriate for your situation.

Teaching an appropriate or right sleeping pattern for your baby entails the need to continuously repeat whatever you have resolved to do that helped him to fall asleep earlier in the evening, every time he wakes up. If you usually feed him until he falls asleep, he will expect you to do this again once he wakes up. If you usually leave him alone until he falls asleep, he will also learn to expect such thing.

Whatever you decide to do, here are two essential things to be concerned about:

1. Once you have begun on a plan of action in order to help your baby learn a sleeping pattern, make sure that you see this plan through. If you have already decide that you will not rock him to sleep anymore and put him down in his cot while still awake but sleepy, then just return to whisper reassurance every five to ten minutes, do not give in after an hour and he still persistently stays awake.

2. Also give your plan enough time in order to work effectively. Give it at least a week or perhaps, even two weeks. Remember that old habits do take some time to completely disappear or be forgotten and the new ones also take time before becoming fully learned or established. Stick with your plan and avoid confusing your baby by constantly chopping and then changing.
